π Todayβs Nugget
Did you see the news yesterday? WW just filed for bankruptcy.
Itβs not the whole company, but their telehealth armβSequenceβshutting down. They acquired it to get in on the Ozempic/Wegovy craze, but it obviously hasnβt gone according to plan.
Hereβs my take:
All empires eventually fall, right? Their profits had been declining for a few years, but this jump into the medical space really pushed them over the edge becauseβ¦
WW members are pissed. Theyβve spend years and thousands of dollars on this plan that assured them eating whatever you want in small portions was THE way to eat and now all of a sudden they pivot to meds.
People are paying more attention to quality not quantity in their diets (yay!) which is particularly important when youβre just getting started. For a very long time, WW βpunishedβ fats by giving them high point values. (Yes fat has more calories, but calories are just fuel your body needs.) Naturally, followers avoided peanut butter and ate more rice cakes to max out their daily allowance. This is not a sustainable or balanced way to eat.
Counting, weighing and measuring is mostly unnecessary torture. Itβs not just the time commitment thatβs a problem, itβs the mental health toll it takes. Guilt and obsession are both super common in chronic trackers. If youβre doing it only for a short time just to take a closer look at whatβs actually going into your body, sure thatβs fine. I definitely donβt recommend it long term, though, for pretty much anyone.
So what now?
WW says theyβre still all-in on GLP-1 meds and plan to roll that support into their main programs. I guess weβll see how this goes over the next couple of quarters, huh?
What's your take on the WW news?
