Q&A with a holistic dentist

🍗 Today’s Nugget

Teeth are the most high-maintenance body part, amiright?! One thing that helps: having a friend who’s a dentist.

For this week’s nugget, I asked Dr. Glenn MacFarlane for a few of his best tips as a holistic dentist. Hope it’s helpful!

What’s the difference between a holistic dentist and a standard general dentist?

A holistic dentist focuses on overall health, not just oral care, as should a standard general dentist. Holistic dentists use biocompatible, non-toxic materials and emphasize natural healing. In contrast, a regular dentist may use conventional materials and treatments that might negatively impact the body's systemic health.

Why do you think people are better off treating dental issues holistically?

Treating dental issues with a holistic approach can lead to better overall health because we utilize natural, non-toxic materials and consider the mouth-body connection in whole not part. Using these materials can minimize exposure to harmful substances and promote long-term wellness.

There’s a lot of buzz around fluoride safety lately, what’s your take?

Fluoride is a poison and can cause great harm to the body if ingested in large quantities or even small quantities over a long period of time. Removing fluoride from water is a debated topic. Supporters argue it reduces exposure to unnecessary chemicals while opponents say fluoride helps prevent tooth decay. It’s most important to consider the potential impact on someone’s overall health long term and not just the teeth.

What’s the most common oral health problem you see and what can we do to prevent it in the first place?

The two most common oral diseases globally are dental cavities (tooth decay) and gum disease (periodontal disease). Both are prevalent and can significantly impact oral health if not managed properly. Both diseases are cause by plaque which is a sticky film, highly acidic, caused by the breakdown of food products by bacteria. Proper oral hygiene habits are a must. The use of water flossers initially to remove heavy debris. Using soft bristle tooth brushes, that are thoroughly cleaned each time they are used and replaced when the bristles become worn. Flossing between teeth and wiping the floss thoroughly before moving on to the next area. Using non-alcohol containing mouth rinses
