Hunger vs. Craving: How to Tell the Difference

+ Healthy swaps for popular products

🍋 RD-Approved

  1. Constipation- If you’re still taking Miralax or spiking every juice with Metamucil, you’re taking in a whole lot of unnecessary junk that could be exacerbating inflammation. A better fiber supplement to keep those bowels moving is psyllium husk. I like it because it has ONE ingredient—and because it works beautifully. Two clean brands are 365 and NOW Foods.

Authentic Matcha is Getting Harder to Find

Due to growing global demand, genuine, high-quality, and organic matcha is becoming scarce. Yu Tea continues to farm some of the highest quality matcha to preserve this tradition:

  • Certified 100% Organic – Pure, non-GMO matcha sourced from dedicated organic farms.

  • Calming yet Energizing – Smooth energy and mental clarity without jitters or crashes.

  • Naturally Detoxifying & Cleansing – Supports your body's natural cleansing processes.

🍗 Today’s Nugget

Ever find yourself standing in front of the fridge like it's a crystal ball? Waiting for it to show you… answers? Snacks? Life direction? It’s not just you.

Half the time, you’re not actually hungry. You’re either exhausted, stressed, dehydrated, procrastinating, OR you just have a really bad habit.

Here’s the thing: Most people can’t tell the difference between real hunger and a craving. This is particularly true for grazers, work-from-home-ers and parents of small children.

Here’s how to tell if you actually should open the refrigerator or not.

Real Hunger = Your Body Talking

  • Comes on gradually

  • Feels like a gentle nudge, not a panic button

  • Protein or veggies sound… acceptable

  • You could eat a full meal, not just chips in the pantry

Fake Hunger = Your Brain Being Sneaky

  • Hits fast and dramatic (hello, “I need chocolate NOW”)

  • You just ate 45 minutes ago

  • Only specific foods will “do” (and they’re usually beige + crunchy)

  • You're bored, tired, stressed, or trying to avoid answering emails

What to do instead of eating

  • Chug a huge glass of water

  • Do 1 minute of jumping jacks to wake the heck up

  • Ask: “Would a nap fix this?” If yes, it’s not hunger

  • Do something mildly productive — like folding laundry or cleaning your desk

Still hungry?
Cool — eat something real and satisfying. Hunger is normal and you’re human, but being more aware of mindless snacking is a fantastic skill that’ll serve you the rest of your life.
