This ONE diet tip can change everything...

You ready for it?

Pair carbs with fat.

I mentioned this little trick briefly in our Eating for Mental Health newsletter, but it’s SO useful for so many other issues like:

  1. Diabetes

  2. Hypoglycemia or feeling “hangry” an hour or two after meals

  3. Losing weight

  4. PCOS

How it works:

Carbs raise blood sugar a lot, protein does a little bit, and fat barely does. If you’re trying to lower A1C, insulin or your weight, do NOT be afraid of adding healthy fat to meals.

If every time you eat a carb you pair it with a fat, you’ll drastically decrease the blood sugar and insulin (a fat storage hormone!!) spike leaving you fuller longer, more energized, less hangry and one balanced meal closer to your weight loss goals.

Pairing examples:

  1. Pasta + olive oil

  2. Fruit + peanut butter

  3. Chips + guac

  4. Potato + butter

Don’t be weak on fat portions either. If you’re having an apple, don’t slather a measly one teaspoon of PB on it; use at least a full tablespoon or two to really maximize satiety and blood sugar control.

Here’s a quick little visual to show how carbs, protein and fat affect your blood sugar.

Q+A

Q: What’s the best Chinese food to order if I’m diabetic and trying to lose weight?

A: Most Chinese restaurants have a “healthy” section where you can find steamed protein and veggie favorites without all the sugary sauces. I suggest ordering a large container of whatever combo you like and then spicing it up with your own seasonings / sauces when you get home. I like using an olive oil-based vinaigrette on my chicken and broccoli for extra flavor and fat to balance out the carbs and protein.
